Small-dollar donors continued to step up to fuel change in the second quarter of 2024. This quarter, almost 2.8 million unique donors gave 12.6 million contributions to 16,813 different campaigns and organizations, totaling $580 million. 54.2% of donors gave multiple contributions during the quarter. The last week of Q2 was especially strong, with 926,323 grassroots donors giving more than $74 million from June 27th to June 30th — one of the largest fundraising weekends in ActBlue’s history. This quarter showed why ActBlue is built for big moments.
In the States – Grassroots donors understand that Democrats holding power in state and local office is crucial to ensuring that attacks on reproductive rights, the LGBTQIA+ community, voting rights, and more are rejected. State legislative races saw an increase of 36.6% in total dollars raised when compared to the same period in 2020, and gubernatorial races saw an increase of 43.0% in number of contributions and a 124.8% increase in total dollars raised when compared to the same period in 2020. Local races saw a substantial increase in the number of total contributions and total dollars raised, with a 34.0% and 90.9% increase respectively.
On the Battleground – Winning in November means claiming victory up and down the ballot and on key issues in key battleground states – from the Presidential race all the way to state legislatures, local races, and organizations advocating for progress in their communities. Grassroots donors understand how crucial these states are and are concentrating their efforts on making sure Democrats are well-positioned for big wins in November.
Compared to the same period in 2020, campaigns and organizations in Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania saw an average increase of 66.5% in total dollars raised. From donors residing in these states, contributions to federal campaigns increased by 33.2%, contributions to state campaigns increased by 108.7%, and contributions to local campaigns increased by 98.9%. Small-dollar donors are showing up big in battleground states.
House & Senate Races – House and Senate fundraising remained steady throughout the second quarter of 2024, raising more than $159 million. House races saw an increase in total dollars compared to the same period in 2020 when there was record fundraising, and Senate races made up 8 of the 10 top-earning candidates on ActBlue this quarter.
Reproductive Rights – On June 24, 2022, conservative Supreme Court justices overturned Roe v. Wade, defying over 50 years of precedent. This quarter, on April 9, 2024, the Republican-controlled Arizona Supreme Court chose to uphold a complete abortion ban from 1864 – even before Arizona became a state. In the week following the Arizona Supreme Court’s decision, over 34,781 small-dollar donors stepped up and gave to Arizona-based groups on ActBlue.
Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion rights advocates and progressive organizers have successfully passed multiple ballot measures to protect reproductive rights in the states. That momentum continues this cycle with a fresh crop of ballot measure campaigns to protect abortion rights qualifying in multiple states for this November. Small-dollar donors gave $3.8 million to reproductive rights organizations this quarter, showing that Republican actions to take away reproductive freedom remain top of mind for voters as election season nears.
Responding to Anti-LGBTQIA+ Attacks – In June, we celebrated Pride Month and the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community. With those celebrations, small-dollar donors also spoke out against the many harmful laws posed by Republicans that threaten this community. As Republicans lay the groundwork for a systemic rollback of LGBTQIA+ rights, small-dollar donors are stepping up to safeguard them. This quarter, 21,011 grassroots donors gave to LGBTQIA+ organizations on ActBlue.
